***********************************************
The map of Troy from 1876 shows Mount Ida on the east side of Troy which is assumed to be the Ida Hill referred to in the above article. The main road to the east is the Brunswick and Pittstown Turnpike. Mark Cassidy most likely obtained his milk at a creamery in Brunswick and sold it in an area of Troy.

There is a Daniel Cassidy listed as a peddler in the 1872 Troy City Directory, but not a milk peddler as Mark is identified in the 1875 directory.

• Newspaper: Daily Times, Tuesday Afternoon, 10 Nov 1885, Troy, Rensselaer, New York. —Daniel E. Paris and wife of West Troy were on their way home from the Farrar lecture last night, and when crossing from the Troy house to the Hall building Mark Cassidy almost drove over them. Mr. Paris took the horses by the heads and turned them aside. When Cassidy attacked Paris with his whip, Mr. Paris broke his umbrella over Cassidy's head. Officer Dunnell took Cassidy into custody. In police court this morning the case was adjourned until November 18.

Note: Daniel E. Paris owned a stove manufacturing company in Troy.

• Newspaper: Troy Daily Times, Saturday Afternoon, 28 Nov 1885, Troy, Rensselaer, New York. In police court this morning Mark Cassidy was fined $100 for attempting with his horse and wagon, on Broadway the night of November 9, when Daniel E. Paris and wife of West Troy were returning from Canon Farrar's lecture, to run over Mr. Paris. Two or three attempts were made, and when Mr. Paris finally turned aside the horse's head, Cassidy struck him with a whip. The magistrate gave Cassidy a severe reprimand, as well as fining him. Threats have been made by friends of Cassidy of further proceedings, and Superintendent Willard will endeavor to procure the names of some of the many persons who saw the affair on Broadway that night, to be used in case such proceedings are undertaken, or the names can be sent to Mr. Paris.

Note: This may be a different Mark Cassidy (e.g. his son). There are only two Mark Cassidys listed in the 1885 Troy City Directory and they reside at the same address.

Both are listed as naturalized US citizens of 45 years.

Notes: This is most likely Mark and Margaret even though both names are incorrect (the spelling Margurett appears several places on the record) and their last residence was 2709 Sixth Avenue - this address is one street over, essentially one behind the other. Further research has shown this to be the alley behind their home on Sixth Avenue which was up for auction to pay for back taxes.

The residence for 45 years is consistent with the 1860 passenger record for Mark and Margaret.

**************************

Note: Earl is the alley behind Sixth Avenue, orginally called Green Street. In 2014, there were a few garage type buildings along this street. Most likely, this was the horse barn for 2715 Sixth Avenue. The 1877 Troy City Directory lists the right side address at Green and Rensselaer as 258.
