John Eads Gatewood --

John Eads Gatewood departed this life on July 16, 2010 at the age of 76.

John was born November 28, 1933 in Pershing, Oklahoma to Minnie and Eugene Gatewood. He was raised in Oklahoma City where he helped his parents in their grocery store located on Phillips & 6th Street. He moved to Norman as a young man, after the death of his parents, and went to work helping his brothers at the Coca-Cola plant. He attended Norman High School where he was a member of the basketball, baseball and football teams. He graduated in 1954. He spent his entire senior year at Norman High building the trophy cases for the "new" high school. John was drafted into the armed forces in 1956 where he was stationed overseas, in occupied Germany. He and his cohorts, through trade and a bit of finagling, had the best trucks in the battalion (because they found a way to order and outfit the trucks with heat and air conditioning!). John married Nancy Marie (Tasier) on November 28, 1963. John was installed as Master of Norman Masonic Lodge No. 38 in 1968. He was the last Master installed at the Lodge downtown (Peters Ave.), and helped with the purchase and building of the "new" Lodge (Porter Ave.). He was an avid bowler and participated in tournaments throughout Oklahoma and the surrounding states. John was a lifelong fisherman, and storyteller. He was a bargain hunter - auctions, garage sales, and flea markets, he was always finding something someone could use. John was a hard worker. His work history included C&B Pump Co., Coca-Cola, Sooner Bowl, Tyler & Simpson, USA Waste, University of Oklahoma and Sam Noble Museum. In his latter years, John found a passion for music, he spent hours each day listening to, and recording music for family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and 5 brothers (Reginald, Keith, Bennie, Thomas and Joe Bob). He is survived by his wife Nancy Marie (Tasier) of the home, Daughter, Jean Marie Gatewood, Son, John Eric Gatewood and wife, Honore, Grandchildren, Chianne and Wesley, all of Norman, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
