• Stevenson Brick Works: Oswego County Messenger, Page 18, Thurs, 20 May 1982, Oswego, Oswego, New York. The Stevenson House on Fifth Street is a brick home in a simple Italianate structure with a hipped roof. The brick structure was constructed in 1870 in what was formerly the town of Oswego and is now Minetto, Edward Stevenson learned to make bricks for the home, which he experimented with by adding coke to the clay, producing a hard black brick. A house on Ellen Street in Oswego, near Third Street, was built of these bricks for a lawyer named Scribner. Each brick was initially molded by hand, but later a steam engine machine was used. The kilns operated for about 15 years, creating bricks used in a number of Oswego businesses. The bricks sold for $10 to $12 per 1,000 in the early 70's. Later the cost was $6 per 1,000.
